Figure Making Can Be Fun?!? Series

Proportions

This first article starts with the proportions for the head of a professional size ventriloquist figure. Making a cast head is the area begining figure makers seem to ask about the most. Constructing a head can certainly be one of the more challenging aspects of figure making. The aim here is to present a method that can work for most beginning figure makers or puppet makers. Let's start with 'Proportions'.

To start with, you need to have some idea what size the head will be. The head measurements or proportions outlined here will work for a 38 - 40" inch tall figure. These measurements are not by any means 'carved in stone'. This is merely a place to start from. Some like larger figures and some like smaller figures.

These measurements (or ones you come up with on your own) will be used for sculpting a model of the head in clay as described in the next article. Any puppet or figure that you make, you always need to know the proportions before you start your sculpt. Click on 'Sculpting' or 'Next Article' button below to go to the next subject.
